Winter River
This painting is of a very cold but bright Winter's day, it was the inky blackness of the river's water that caught my attention. The brightness of the backdrop of the warm colours of a few remaining Autumn trees are a foil for the chilly blues of the ice and snow. I wanted to paint this picture wet-in-wet, so chose oil paint as they remain workable for a long period. I have painted it mostly with a palette knife 'impasto' with thick layers of paint and 'scraffito' or scratching through the layers for some of the trunks and bare branches of the leafless trees. There are glazes of paint over the water to create the icy feel.
This painting comes unframed and can be hung without a frame as I have painted the sides of the canvas with black acrylic paint.
